Sylvain Martel’s winemaking journey began in the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern Rhône, where he honed his craft and spent a decade managing a small organic estate in the Ardèche. His dedication to organic practices and his expertise in the region’s terroir caught the attention of the renowned Graillot family of Crozes-Hermitage, who brought him to Beaujolais to help establish and manage Domaine de Fa. But it was in 2016, when Sylvain crossed paths with Anne-Sophie Dubois, that his life took a fateful turn. Drawn by both the charm of Fleurie and the shared passion for Gamay, he decided to settle there.
By 2018, Sylvain was ready to embark on his own winemaking venture. He found his perfect canvas in a 1.3-hectare plot of old Gamay vines in the lieu-dit of Bessay, located in the western part of Juliénas. This small but treasured vineyard became the foundation of his new project, where Sylvain could fully express his winemaking philosophy—a blend of tradition, respect for the land, and a relentless pursuit of quality.
Sylvain’s wines from this plot reflect his deep connection to the terroir and his years of experience in organic viticulture. With each vintage, he brings forth wines that are both authentic and full of character, showcasing the unique qualities of Juliénas. Sylvain Martel’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a profound respect for the land, culminating in a project that promises to make its own mark in the world of Beaujolais.
